Mexico’s Patent and Trademark Office (IMPI) Suspends Operations and Deadlines on June 11th, 2026, Ahead of the FIFATM World Cup Opening

Regulatory Context

On June 10th, 2026, the Federal Official Gazette published a resolution issued by the Director General of the Mexican Institute of Industrial Property (“IMPI“) suspending the Institute’s operations, as well as all deadlines applicable to its filings, services, and administrative proceedings, on June 11th, 2026. The measure responds to the extraordinary mobility conditions expected in Mexico City as a result of the opening event of the 2026 FIFATM World Cup, including road closures, heavy traffic, and the potential saturation of urban services, which will affect timely access to the Institute by both users and personnel. The resolution enters into force on the business day following its publication.

Practical Impact

June 11th, 2026, will not be considered as a business day for purposes of any proceeding before IMPI. Accordingly, all terms expiring on that date — including responses to office actions, opposition and renewal deadlines, evidence submissions, and terms running within invalidity, cancellation, and infringement proceedings — are automatically extended to the next business day, June 12th, 2026. The suspension applies to the computation of statutory terms generally, regardless of whether filings are made in person or through the Institute’s electronic filing system.

Considerations

Companies and counsel managing IP portfolios should adjust their docketing systems to reflect the recalculation of any deadline falling on June 11th, 2026, and confirm internally how electronic submissions made on that date will be treated for receipt purposes. Given that the suspension stems from a citywide event, similar measures by other federal agencies headquartered in Mexico City cannot be ruled out; monitoring the Federal Official Gazette over the coming days is advisable for matters subject to deadlines before other authorities.
