Accord for the Temporary Application of Visa in Ordinary Passports to Nationals of the Republic of Peru

The Ministry of the Interior, in conjunction with the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, has issued an official statement regarding the temporary issuance of visas for nationals of the Republic of Peru. This temporary measure is for those intending to enter Mexican territory as visitors without permission to conduct gainful activities. The visas, granted to individuals holding ordinary passports, will be necessary for those visiting Mexico for tourism, business, or other nonprofitable activities. It is crucial to note that this visa application process is a temporary requirement for all Peruvian visitors seeking entry into Mexican territory.

The Accord determining the temporary visa application has been published in the Federal Official Gazette on April 5th; it will become effective on May 6th. From the date of the Accord’s enforcement, visitors must apply for a visa from the Mexican consular authority before entering Mexico.

It should be noted that foreign visitors holding a valid visa or permanent residency from Canada, the United States of America, the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland, and/or any countries comprising the Schengen Area will be able to utilize these upon entry, in lieu of the Mexican visa.

For its part, the Government of Peru invoked the Principle of International Reciprocity by suspending through a Supreme Decree the tourist and business visa exemption for Mexican citizens holding ordinary passports; however, in a matter of days following the publication of the Decree, the Peruvian government rescinded its content and effects, thereby confirming the visa exemption for Mexican nationals. The decision aligns with the guiding principles of the Pacific Alliance, of which both states are members.
