The purpose of this note is to inform you about the recent approval of the Mexican Official Standard NOM-006-STPS-2023, published in the Official Journal of the Federation on March 7th ,2024, which establishes safety measures and health protocols in the workplace.
Objective
The purpose of this NOM is to define the safety and health protections standards in the work environment to minimize the hazards associated with workers engaged in the handling and storage of materials using machinery.
It is essential to implement specific preventive measures, such as proper training in the handling of equipment, constant supervision, the use of personal protective equipment, and regular inspection of machinery. These measures must be applied in accordance with government regulations and current industrial safety standards to ensure a safe and healthy work environment for workers involved in such activities.
Employer´s Main Obligations
Key factors to consider:
- Having a specialized system for inspecting and maintaining machinery used in the storage and handling of materials;
- Have protocols in place for the installation, operation, inspection, and maintenance of machinery used in material handling, as well as for responding to emergencies during use; and
- Provide employees with the necessary personal protective equipment for storage and handling of materials with machinery, according to the risks involved.
